YELLOW WARNING of RAIN for eastern Northern Ireland, South Wales and south and southwest England.
A further area of heavy rain will spread eastwards across the UK on Friday, clearing the southeast of England during the early hours of Saturday. 20-30 mm of rain will fall quite widely, with around 40 mm on some high ground in the southwest of England and south Wales. The heavy rain will be accompanied by strong to gale force winds.The public should be aware of possible disruption, primarily due to further flooding, chiefly in areas already, or recently, affected. Valid from 0800 Friday until 0300 Saturday. YELLOW WARNING of SNOW for High ground of Scotland and northern England. A band of heavy rain, reaching the west coast of Scotland early on Friday morning, will spread eastwards across the rest of Scotland during the day, with the rain turning increasingly to snow as it moves eastwards. Snow will fall to low levels for a time but may tend to revert to rain there, a concern in its own right. At higher levels, the snow combined with gales is expected to give some very poor travelling conditions.The public should be aware of the likelihood of a spell of disruptive wintry weather, with impacts to travel and perhaps also to power supplies. Valid on Friday from 0900 until 2100. AMBER WARNING of RAIN for Somerset levels. Heavy rain will affect southwest England on Friday before clearing overnight into Saturday. Heavy, squally showers will then follow from the west on Saturday morning. The public should be prepared for the likelihood of significant disruption from flooding across the Somerset Levels. Valid on Friday from 1200 until Saturday on 0300. YELLOW WARNING of RAIN for eastern Scotland. Outbreaks of rain and hill snow will spread from the west this afternoon, becoming heavy at times, clearing east by late evening. Snow may fall to quite low levels at first before becoming confined to the hills. 15 to 25 mm of rain is likely, and with saturated ground across parts of eastern Scotland, roads may be affected by run-off from fields and standing water, perhaps leading to some minor flooding on prone spots. The rain will be accompanied by strong to gale force southeasterly winds, with gusts reaching 50-60 mph in exposed areas. The public should be aware that the combination of gales and heavy rain will lead to some difficult driving conditions. Valid from 1500 Friday until 2300 Friday. YELLOW WARNING of WIND for Shetland. Severe gale force southeasterly winds will develop across Shetland during Friday evening with gusts 60 or 70 mph, perhaps 80 mph or more locally.Large waves, particularly around times of high tide, may overtop exposed coasts and causeways.The public should be aware of the risk of disruption to travel. Valid from 1800 Friday to 1200 Saturday. YELLOW WARNING for SNOW for Northern Ireland and western Scotland. Showers will turn increasingly to sleet and snow on Friday night and into Saturday morning. These will bring snow accumulations of 2 to 5 cm on ground above 200 m and perhaps 10 cm on the highest routes above 300 m. The heavier showers may even leave a cm or two of snow on low ground. In addition clear spells will lead to a risk of icy stretches. The public should be aware of the likelihood of some difficult driving conditions and the possibility of travel disruption. Valid from 2115 on Friday until 1200 on Saturday. Friday 31st January 2014 YELLOW WARNING for ICE for Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and western England. Outbreaks of rain will clear eastwards on Friday evening and into the early hours of Saturday. As skies clear, temperatures will fall allowing icy stretches to form on untreated surfaces across northern and western Britain. The situation will be complicated by a wintry mix of showers following from the west. Snow accumulations will mainly occur on ground above around 200 m but some slight accumulations are possible to lower levels locally. In addition the wintry showers may wash off earlier treatment of surfaces increasing the risk of ice. The public should be aware of the risk of difficult driving conditions. Valid from 2300 on Friday until 1100 on Saturday. Friday 31st January 2014 YELLOW WARNING of WIND for western and southern areas of the UK Winds will increase on Saturday, with gusts widely to around 50-60 mph, and perhaps to around 70 mph in exposed parts of the north. It will primarily fall as snow above 300 m but may still give rainfall totals of over 20 mm at lower levels. The public should be aware of the potential for localised disruption due to flooding. Valid from 1300 Monday until 2200 Tuesday. YELLOW WARNING of ICE for parts of SCOTLAND Ice is expected to form on untreated surfaces later on Monday and through the early part of Tuesday. In addition, snow showers are increasingly likely across Shetland on Monday and across the northern Scottish mainland on Monday night into early Tuesday, giving a cm or two in places. Note that significant amounts of further snow are expected across the Grampians. The public should be aware of the risk of disruption to travel. In addition there is a risk of ice accretion on exposed power lines in Shetland in the bitterly cold gale force southeasterly winds. YELLOW WARNING of ICE
A colder, westerly, air stream will follow Sunday's frontal band bringing heavy wintry showers and wet surfaces to many areas during Sunday evening and night. Clear skies between showers are expected to allow temperatures to fall to or just below freezing at times resulting in a risk of icy stretches forming on untreated surfaces. Some areas of the United Kingdom will also see a covering of snow. Snow amounts will generally be small, mostly accumulating on vegetation, however more persistent and heavy show is expected over the higher ground of western and central Highland and the southern Grampians. See separate warning for snow. The public should be aware of the potential for some disruption to travel. Valid from 1800 Sunday until 1000 Monday. YELLOW WARNING of SNOW A further area of rain and snow will affect parts of Scotland during Sunday night and into Monday morning. The snow will affect the higher routes across parts of central Scotland with drifting in the strong to gale force winds which will accompany the snow. Rain or sleet is expected at lower levels, however above 250 m some wet snow is likely at times with perhaps 2 to 5 cm of snow accumulating, whilst above 400 m a further 10 to 20 cm is possible. The public should be aware of the potential for disruption to travel, as well as difficult driving conditions with a risk of blizzards at times. Valid from 1800 Sunday until 0900 Monday. YELLOW WARNING of WIND Winds will increase through Sunday across the north of Northern Ireland, the west of Scotland and the Northern Isles. Gale or severe gale force winds are expected from Sunday afternoon through into Monday morning, particularly for the Western and Northern Isles, with the potential for gusts in excess of 70 or even 80 mph at times. Heavy rain will be an additional hazard for Northern Ireland, for which see separate warning. The public should be aware of the risk of disruption to travel. Valid from 1200 Sunday until 0900 Monday. Heavy showers forming over the English Channel on the southern flank of this area of low pressure will be driven into southern and southeastern England by brisk onshore winds on Monday and, more especially, on Tuesday. These frequent heavy showers will bring a further 10-15 mm and locally up to 25 mm rain to parts of southern and southeastern England on Tuesday.
