Issued at: 11:01 on Fri 19 Aug 2016 Valid from:02:00 on Sat 20 Aug 2016 Valid to: 21:00 on Sat 20 Aug 2016 A spell of unseasonably strong southwesterly winds, accompanied by heavy, blustery showers, is expected to reach the southwest of the UK during the early hours of Saturday, moving east across many parts of England and Wales through the day. Gusts are expected to reach 40-50 mph inland, and 50 to very locally 60 mph along exposed coastlines in the south and west. Please be aware that these winds may lead to disruption to transport, and in view of the time of the year, there is increased potential for disruption to outdoor activities. Also, strong winds and large waves will coincide with a period of spring tides this weekend. This is expected to lead to some localised instances of spray and wave over-topping of flood defences around the coasts of southwest England and Wales. This warning has been updated to extend the warning more widely across England and Wales, whilst bringing forward the start time, this latter aspect only applicable to southwestern parts of England and Wales. YELLOW WARNING of RAIN for northwest England. Issued at: 07:17 on Sat 20 Aug 2016 Valid from: 09:00 on Sat 20 Aug 2016 Valid to: 18:00 on Sat 20 Aug 2016 Bands of heavy showers will affect parts of northwest England and southern Scotland today. Please be aware that this will make travel more difficult for holiday traffic due to surface water and spray, and may disrupt some outdoor activities for a time. Despite this weekend's rainfall, an extreme drought has been declared in the South, Southwest, and Southeast after 45 or more days without significant rainfall. This means that gardeners will be asked to conserve water by not watering plants, and only using watering systems if necessary at night. The weather after Monday doesn't look likely to help the problem, with a potential 10-20 days without rainfall, and possibly longer in the Southeast.
We will update you if the situation changes. EARLY YELLOW WARNING FOR WIND FOR SOUTHWEST ENGLAND
Issued at 10:51 on Wed 17 Aug 2016 Valid from 07:00 on Sat 20 Aug to 21:00 on Sat 20 Aug A spell of unseasonably strong southwesterly winds, accompanied by heavy, blustery showers, is expected to develop across the south of the UK later on Friday but peaking during Saturday daytime. Additionally the strongest winds will lead to large waves round exposed coastlines. Gusts of up to 45 mph inland, and 45 to 55 mph along exposed coastlines, are expected. Please be aware that these may lead to disruption to transport, and in view of the time of the year there is increased potential for disruption to holidaymakers and outdoor activities. YELLOW EARLY WARNING of RAIN for the far northwest of Scotland and parts of the Western Isles.

Please be aware of the likelihood of low impacts. For example, driving conditions are expected to deteriorate with localised flooding on prone sections of road. The persistence of the heavy rain may also affect outdoor events and holiday camping activities in these areas. The rainfall is expected to ease later on Friday. This warning has been updated to raise the likelihood and to extend the area southwards to include the Isle of Mull and northwest Argyll.
