YELLOW WARNING of WIND and SNOW for MUCH OF SCOTLAND
Issued at 10:56 on Wed 11 Jan Valid from 00:05 on Thu 12 Jan Valid to 23:55 on Thu 12 Jan Strong winds, gusting up to around 60 mph in places, will continue to drive heavy, squally, wintry showers across much of Scotland on Thursday. Many of the showers will fall as snow away from western coasts, with ice, hail and lightning posing additional hazards. 10-20 cm of snow may accumulate over some higher ground during the day, with drifting and blizzard conditions at times. Several cm of snow may affect some lower-lying areas. Road and rail services may be affected with delays and cancellations possible. Expect longer journey times. This warning has been updated to extend the main risk of impacts slightly further east across parts of southern Scotland. YELLOW WARNING of SNOW for SOUTHWEST SCOTLAND, NORTHERN IRELAND, NORTHWEST ENGLAND, NORTHERN ADN WESTERN WALES and PARTS OF SOUTHWEST ENGLAND Issued at 11:16 on Wed 11 Jan Valid from 00:05 on Thu 12 Jan Valid to 23:55 on Thu 12 Jan Snow showers, initially affecting Northern Ireland and southwest Scotland, will progressively extend southeast to affect the rest of the warning areas during Thursday. There is the potential for disruption to transport networks with longer journey times. Icy stretches on untreated roads and pavements are also possible. This warning has been updated to extend it into parts of southwest England and to slightly adjust the boundary across southwest Scotland. YELLOW WARNING of SNOW for SOUTHERN WALES and SOUTHERN ENGLAND Issued at 10:28 on Thu 12 Jan Valid from 12:00 on Thu 12 Jan Valid to 23:55 on Thu 12 Jan Rain moving eastwards across the south of the UK today may turn to snow in places. The most likely scenario is for 2 to 4 cm to fall above about 100 m elevation across parts of southeast England with 1 to 2 cm to low levels in places. However, there remains a small chance of snow settling more widely with 5 to 10 cm at low levels this evening, leading to disruption to road, rail and air services as well as interruptions to power supplies and other utilities - this more likely across East Anglia and southeast England. Across Wales and western England snow will more likely be confined to high ground. Associated heavy rain and strong winds may prove additional hazards. As skies clear this evening and tonight there is also potential for widespread ice to form quite rapidly on untreated surfaces. This is an update to add more details of possible snow amounts; also to delay the start time a little. YELLOW WARNING of ICE for SOUTHEASTERN SCOTLAND and EASTERN AND SOUTHERN ENGLAND Issued at 10:42 on Thu 12 Jan Valid from 00:05 on Fri 13 Jan Valid to 11:00 on Fri 13 Jan Ice is expected to form on untreated surfaces on Thursday night and last into Friday morning. In addition, some outbreaks of sleet and snow are likely to run quickly southwards on Friday morning, chiefly affecting parts of northern and eastern England, clearing the extreme southeast by late morning. This may give local accumulations of one to two cm and add to icy conditions in places. Ice will lead to the risk of disruption with difficult driving conditions and expect longer journey times. The greater risk of disruption is across the Midlands, East Anglia and southeast England. A further 2-5 cm of snow is possible, with an additional 10 cm across some higher ground. Further significant disruption to transport networks seems likely, although not all areas will be equally affected. Ice, lightning and strong winds will continue to pose additional hazards across parts of the area with large waves affecting northeast coastal areas. This warning has been updated to confine the main impacts to northern Scotland and the western side of Northern Ireland.
